Tilley Hat Fitting Guide:

How to Measure Your Head

Most hat makers make 4 or 5 sizes; Tilley make 13. Tilley consider it a matter of principle, no one shall be deprived of the pleasure and privileges of Tilley Hat ownership simply because of an uncommon head size.

Like footwear, your Tilley Hat must be sized properly. To find your hat size, use a tape measure and draw it right around your head. For the best-looking and most comfortable fit, please make sure that the bottom of the tape touches your eyebrows while resting straight around your head. Hold it there comfortably and do not pull tight! Tell us this measurement in inches or centimetres. We’ll take it from there.

We can supply paper Tilley tape measures free of charge if you require. Just email a request.

Hat Sizing Guide

The Tilley Hat fits more comfortably than other hats. It’s designed to be worn low on your head and slightly loose. It should be held on by gravity, not by painful pressure on your forehead! For the proper fit, you should be able to easily insert two fingers, flat, between the middle of your forehead and the front of the Hat. The Hat should be loose enough that you can rotate it to the left and right, and lift it up and down, without friction on your forehead. When it’s windy, use the cord!

Different Styles and Fabrics of Your Tilley Hat

Each of our Tilley Hats are hand-made from a variety of fabrics in a handful of styles making each one unique in its fit.

Styling:

You’ll find our ‘round’ crown styles (i.e. T3, LTM3) and our ‘oval’ crown styles (i.e. T4, LTM6, LTM5 etc.) measure the same circumference but feel slightly different on your head. If you can fit two fingers flat between your forehead and Tilley Hat then the size is correct, even though they may feel different due to the crown style. If used to a ‘round’ crown style, it may take you a few days to get used to an ‘oval’ crown style.

Fabric:

Although we offer a variety of fabrics, you’ll find that all our Hats are made with the same measurements (i.e. a T4 cotton duck Tilley will measure the same as a TH4 in hemp Tilley). However, much like your clothes, individual fabrics feel different on, even when they’re the same size. For example, your lightweight nylon LTM6 Tilley Hat will feel different than your TH4 hemp Tilley Hat. Due to the varying fabric weights, each Hat offers its own unique feel.

If your new Hat doesn't fit, send it back. If the colour doesn't suit you, send it back. If a new Hat has not been worn or washed, we'll cheerfully exchange it for one of the right size or colour. If the new Hat isn't quite what you expected, we'll refund the purchase price.
