Tilley Endurables

The creator of the Tilley hat, Alex Tilley was born in 1938 in Mount Albert, Canada. Once a successful art dealer, Alex Tilley would never have dreamed that one day he would have created what is arguably, 'The Perfect Hat'.

History of Tilley

Tilley hats were created to solve a problem; Alex Tilley, an avid sailor, grew tired of replacing his hats after they would blow away, sink or shrink and warp. So taking matters into his own hands, Alex began designing his ideal hat, one that would solve the issues he wanted to fix with his current hats. He sought the assistance of a sail maker to help design and create the hat. After several months of research and creating prototypes, Tilley had finally created the perfect hat. Alex himself recalls that the reason he was able to get it right, was because he merely created the hat as a hobby and so didn't rush the process in any way at all.

Soon enough, other sailors began noticing Tilley's hat and started asking for a hat of their own. Alex Tilley was happy to comply and began selling his hats to them. Seeing an opportunity to sell further afield, Tilley began sending free hats to sailing and yachting magazine editors in return for free advertising. This worked all too well and soon enough Tilley were selling at boat shows right across America, with their notoriety increasing on a daily basis.

All of the Tilley products are still manufactured in Canada, something which Alex Tilley himself is insistent on. He wants to ensure that the quality remains high and unchanged. Every year more than 250,000 Tilley hats are produced and shipped worldwide. As well as hats, Tilley have now expanded and sell everything from Jackets and skirts to socks and belts.

The Future of Tilley

In January 2015, Alex Tilley announced his plans to retire. He has stated that while his daughters won't be filling his shoes and continuing to run the company, he will be ensuring that the company goes into the hands of someone who shares his dedication to the brand and will continue to maintain the high standards that Alex set all those years ago when he began making the hats.
